Mac VST and RTAS, PC VST Reviewed: PC VST versionThe vocoder can be used to create "scientific" sound effects, or to produce otherworldly effects for all those lovey-dovey, romantic songs. And when used properly can add a unique dimension to even tiny pieces of gnarly guitar. Takahiro Honda, one of the most famous Japanese soft synths/basses creators, has openly admitted to using Orange Vocoder to tweak his sounds in preparation for the making of his hit track "Flying Machine". (Honda's own synth tracks are equally riveting, occasionally stunning me as much as this particular vocoder!)For example, here's Honda in one of his member postings on the Toronto reissue site (scroll down). He claims to end up with a steady sine wave "something like this" that goes up and down as well as to the right or left. I point out that the first two projects above uses the "funky" synth engine (I believe he's talking about the slide-down synth engine):
So, it's easy to use, very transparent, sounds great in demo mode, and can sound pretty interesting if used with a simple piece of guitar. As a rule of thumb, you'll need a clean, crystal clear source audio, and you'll need some way of controlling the amount of "natural harmonics" in the carrier signal. For example, using a regular synth engine coupled to an attenuator or a level control lets you blend the natural harmonics of the synth engine in with the harmonics due to the stuffing of the modulator. Most synths these days can be quite choked and noisy (i.e. have lots of those natural harmonics), so with a little creative use of the controls you can get a great deal of control over the appearance of the vocoder and create a unique sound with a wide variety of textures and modes. Although, of course, the best VST editors like ASIO4ALL will let you mix the synth engine with the modulator using the right-click dialogue that pops up when you right-click on the synth engine. d2c66b5586
