Keep Me In Suspense Collection

The Jews' question to Jesus, "How long will you keep us in suspense?" implies that their state of unbelief was the Lord's fault, not theirs, and so they requested Jesus to tell them "plainly". They were not asking Jesus to speak more slowly or to enunciate his words. Their question showed that they understood the ancient prophets to have foretold the coming of the Messiah, and they lived in expectation of this. Furthermore, they could not ignore the extraordinary ministry of Jesus; there was an outside chance that he might be the Messiah. Hence their question.

Each episode tells a creepy and suspenseful story, and well-known actors made guest appearances on episodes, including horror stars, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Without sharing spoilers, here are two episodes the stars appear in:

Once you understand what suspense is, you'll see there's no mystery why the suspense genres have become so dramatically popular over the past decades. And also why they show every sign of continuing to attract a large audience.

All this to say, I love to write stories dripping with suspense in my own books, but I also like teaching writers how to implement suspense in their own stories, especially if they are mysteries, thrillers, or suspense books.

It leads the reader forward through twists and curves, ever beckoning toward a satisfying resolution. It's a bit difficult to hold in your hand and look squarely on the face of it, but this only adds to the mystique and allure of suspense.

It's also very clear when a story is a suspense story because of this tension. Tell me you don't feel that nail-biting grip when you watch this trailer for Ransom, or when you read the back cover for a mystery, thriller, or suspense book.

For example, the Sophocles play Oedipus Rex relies heavily on suspense as readers (or viewers) press forward to learn how the tragic hero will fulfill the prophecy that predicts he will kill his father and marry his mother.

Suspense is what motivates the reader to keep turning pages as they anticipate story events. Every kind of story should have some suspense serving this function, whether slated for a New York editor or simply for your own enjoyment.

In a suspense story, you need to create an atmosphere of underlying peril and let your reader know things are not what they seem, dropping hints along the way so they can anticipate the truth under the surface.

The three modalities that entertain a reader and move the story forward are curiosity, surprise, and suspense. While the three are related, they are not synonyms. Let's look at a few differences worth noting.

The scream first gets our surprised attention, and the man's stocking-covered head sustains the surprise a moment longer, but then we're moving into suspense which will take over nicely as the surprise dissipates.

In my book, I followed this up immediately with literal suspense, as the SUV hung over the edge of pavement destroyed by volcanic flow. I laid out some possible outcomes for my readers and let them predict what would happen, replacing surprise with suspense.

I think of surprise and suspense like my two favorite flavors of ice cream. Suspense is a deep, dark, intense chocolate. It permeates your senses and triggers your pleasure centers, melting in a slow release of delicious tension.

In your own work, you'll want to provide both surprise and suspense for your reader. But use the surprises sparingly, as too many will dilute their effect. Feel free, however, to slather on the suspense.

But in order for this to happen, you need to provide the sort of foundation where suspense can begin and build. You need to draw your readers deeply into the story world and make sure they care about what happens to your protagonist.

In my story, I might envision a scene revealing a secret relationship between two of my characters (suspense). I might plan something around discovering a character's hidden identity (suspense). And I might throw in a plane crash (surprise!)

Romantic Suspense is another complicated category. Much like the name implies, these stories have both elements of romance and suspense. How much of each is frequently debated. This will be a topic in a future column.

The Executive Office for United States Attorneys (EOUSA) is responsible for establishing policies and procedures for the collection of criminal monetary penalties which includes restitution, fines, assessments, penalties, interest, bail bond forfeitures, and court costs in criminal cases. See 28 C.F.R. §§ 0.22 and 0.171.

The United States Attorneys are responsible for the enforcement of judgments, fines, penalties and forfeitures exceeding $100 imposed in their respective districts. However, the Assistant Attorney General for any litigating division which has jurisdiction over a case may assume such enforcement responsibilities if she or he so notifies the United States Attorney in writing. Numerous functions relating to the collection of criminal monetary penalties are assigned to the Attorney General by statute; these are now delegated to the United States Attorneys. See 28 C.F.R. § 0.171.

Unless the court orders a stay of the criminal imposition as part of the criminal judgment, or provides for other than immediate payment of the fine or restitution, the government should enforce collections as soon as practicable after sentencing.

Upon the petition of the government showing that reasonable efforts to collect a fine are not likely to be effective, the court may remit all or part of the unpaid portion of the fine. 18 U.S.C. § 3573. Each United States Attorney should develop a written district policy for the remission of uncollectible fines to guide the Financial Litigation/Asset Recovery Unit in preparing petitions for remission. Where there is a reasonable belief that a fine will never be collected, a petition for remission of all or part of the fine is preferable to placing the debt in suspense. Restitution cannot be remitted under 18 USC § 3573.

Absent a court-ordered stay on appeal, a defendant who fails to pay restitution that is due immediately or defaults on a payment plan should be aggressively pursued for collection of the debt pursuant to the following guidelines:

If you underpay or overpay, though, those funds will most likely go into a suspense account, which is a catch-all account used to hold funds temporarily. As the name suggests, a "suspense account" is an account that the servicer sets up to keep a borrower's funds in a suspended state until it decides how to allocate them.

The most common use for a suspense account is for partial payments. If you pay only part of what you owe for a particular installment, the suspense account will hold your payment in suspense until a full payment is available. For example, let's say you split your mortgage payments up and pay two payments per month rather than once a month. The servicer most likely will place the first payment in a suspense account until the second payment is received. Once the suspense account has enough funds to make a full payment, the servicer will remove the funds from suspense and apply them to the account.

Here's another example: You pay $1,000 on your $2,000 monthly mortgage payment for June. The servicer puts this amount in a suspense account. The next month (July), you pay $2,000. The servicer then takes $1,000 from the July payment, adds it to the $1,000 in suspense, and applies that $2,000 to the June payment, leaving $1,000 of the money you sent for July. Because $1,000 isn't enough to cover the July payment, the servicer puts it into suspense, and the cycle continues. If you continue to pay just $2,000 each subsequent month, you won't get current on the loan. Your servicer could then charge you late fees, report the delinquency to the credit reporting bureaus, and eventually start a foreclosure.

Your mortgage lender may also use a suspense account for overpayments. For example, if you always round up when you write out your check to pay the mortgage payment, the servicer might put those funds in a suspense account.

If you dispute any of the amounts that your servicer claims that you owe, don't reduce your payment amount to remove the disputed amount. The servicer might consider your payment a partial payment and place it in suspense until it receives the full payment. Again, if you do this and don't get current on the loan, the servicer could potentially charge you late fees, report the delinquency to the credit reporting bureaus, and eventually start a foreclosure.

The rules also state that if a servicer receives a partial payment from the borrower, the payment may be held in a suspense account. But the servicer must inform the borrower about it on the monthly statement. Also, when the amount in the suspense account is sufficient to cover a full payment, the servicer must credit the borrower's account.

Sometimes, the servicer makes a mistake and places payments into a suspense account without proper justification. For example, say you send in your October payment of $1,100 to your servicer, but the servicer incorrectly records the payment as $100. Because this payment is not a full payment in the eyes of the servicer, it places this amount in a suspense account, and nothing is applied to the loan. The servicer now considers you one month behind in payments. Even if you make November's payment of $1,100 on time and in full, you'll still be considered behind because the servicer will take $1,000 from the November payment, add it to the $100 in suspense and apply that to October's payment. That leaves $100 of the money you sent for November. But because this amount isn't enough to cover the November payment, it will go into suspense, and the cycle will continue. 2b1af7f3a8
