Over the years a lot has changed regarding the best credit cards to use for airfare purchases, so in this post I wanted to take a closer look at that. There are a couple of key things to consider when deciding which card to use for buying airline tickets:
The Ink Business Preferred offers 3x points on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases every anniversary year on travel (including airline tickets), shipping purchases, internet, cable, and phone services, and advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines. When you combine the 3x points and travel coverage, this is an excellent card for airfare spending.
When deciding on the credit card to use for airline ticket purchases, consider both the card that offers the most valuable rewards, as well as the card that offers the best travel protection. My top picks for airline ticket purchases are the:

(Due to some tools I always carry, I HAVE to check them.) And the higher-end cards will also include Priority Access and access to the clubs. And I will take the airline's club over third-party ones any day of the week, mainly because you have access to the airline's CSRs, which is very beneficial when there are IRROPS, which has been a constant issue lately. Instead of having to leave the club and find a CSR, you have one right there.

The JetBlue Plus Card is one of the few co-brand airline credit cards to make this list of the best card for purchasing flight tickets. The primary reason why is because it earns more than 2 points per $1, which is the benchmark reward rate for airline purchases.
The many Southwest Airlines credit cards make the best credit cards for flights list, mainly because of the ability to earn the Southwest Companion Pass and because Southwest still lets travelers check in two bags for free. Southwest Airlines offers three personal credit cards.
The best credit cards for flights make the list because they not only earn you those coveted points or miles, but they also come with benefits. Depending on the credit card, these benefits can include everything from travel statement credits to lounge access, and even the ability to transfer points or miles.
Hey Karla, thanks for reading the blog! The Sapphire Preferred has generally been considered the best starter card for rewards travel. It earns Ultimate Rewards points which can be transferred out to numerous travel partners (United, Southwest, etc), and it comes with a 60,000 point bonus. It also earns 2x points per $1 on travel purchases. Of course, only apply for a credit card if you can manage your cc spending, and you have a good credit score. Hope this helps!
The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a powerhouse when it comes to booking flights. It offers the ability to earn valuable Ultimate Rewards points at increased rates, best-in-class travel insurance and access to participating lounges when you travel. Even the occasional traveler can get enough value out of this card to justify carrying it.
This card also offers travel protections, but perhaps the best benefit of this card is that it gives you access to expanded award space that is only available to cardholders. This can come in handy when it comes time to use your miles and could mean this card makes sense even if you otherwise prefer to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points to transfer to United.
Flights tend to be the most valuable redemptions, unless your frequent flyer program offers transfer to another loyalty program, in which case you may see more value in transferring miles to another currency. Hotels, rental cars and other travel may make a great second-most-valuable-redemption option depending on the program. Cash redemption options are typically not as lucrative with airline cards, if available at all. Shopping options and other merchandise or gift card redemptions tend to be the least valuable and are at best equivalent with cash redemption values.
The best airline rewards card is the card that is most rewarding for you. Consider where you want to go, the level of luxury you want on your flights and how much you spend on airline tickets. Also consider whether the card offers benefits such as enhanced points earning rates on your spending, extra elite qualifying miles for qualification or special promotions for cardholders.
The Amex Platinum card comes with a long list of travel benefits and ranks at the top of the best travel rewards cards list. It also has one of the highest earning rates for airline purchases.
